The southwest coast of the island has a succession of
sandy beaches. They are sheltered from the prevailing
north wind, and have crystal clear water. The beaches
of Naxos are some of the finest in Greece. The east
coast of Naxos has predominantly small sandy or stony
beaches. The beaches of St. George near Naxos town,
Orkos and Pirgaki are popular with wind surfers.
