The Potamia Valley
 
 
 
The Potamia valley is one of the greenest and fertile valleys in the interior of the island. It contains the three small villages of Kato, Mesi and Ano Potamia. A semi-permanent river and several springs supply the many orchards and olive groves of the valley.

It is a beautiful valley for walking. There are footpaths which connect the three villages and from Mesi or Kato Potamia tracks lead to the abandoned 9th century church of Agios Mamas.
 
  The church of Agios Mamas was originally the largest orthodox cathedral on Naxos and was converted into a Catholic church in the 13th century.

Local stories suggest that the nearby bishops' summer residence had the the only swimming pool on the island in medieval times.
In more recent times the former residence is used by a different kind of occupant.
The three villages all have local tavernas which serve traditional food.
 
Opposite the church in Ano Potamia is a taverna which has a large shaded garden with citrus trees and a fresh water spring.
